Kathleen Celmins is the CEO and co-founder of Amplified NOW, a video-first content marketing platform that helps businesses and experts do their content marketing in a fraction of the time. She sat down with Tracy Borreson, the CEO and founder of TLB Coaching and Events, to talk about how they are doing marketing differently.

What Is Personal Brand Coaching?

TLB helps people find their personal brand and, most importantly, use that information to be themselves at work.

Society has trained us that when we are working, we need to be “professional,” but Tracy believes that being professional and being yourself are not mutually exclusive.

Tracy worked in the corporate world and found that she would turn into the “acceptable” version of herself when she got there. TLB’s goal is to help you get to the point where you learn to own your personal brand and then lead with it.

Tracy found that all the biggest companies in the world have embraced their unique corporate brand and created hiring processes to find the right team members based on their values.

Tracy is passionate about breaking the narrative that if we join someone else’s business, we’re just supposed to be a wheel in a cog. “We are humans with emotions, feelings, and passions that can help drive our work,” says Tracy. She believes those feelings matter.

Discovering Your Personal Brand

A lot of people think a personal brand is an external thing, like a logo or tagline. But, really, at the core of it, your personal brand is the feeling people have after spending time with you.

Tracy encourages people to ask themselves:

  • What do you want people to remember about you?
  • What do you want people to feel when they are with you?
  • What kind of experience do you want to create for the people you work with?
  • What are your core values?

Once you have discovered what matters, you have to own it. But that doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Owning your personal brand comes with time and practice.

Staying True To Your Personal Brand

Your personal brand matters whether you own your own business or are part of a large corporation. Your personal brand is how you show up to do things.

When you are true to your personal brand, you show up and do the things that feel authentic to you. When you aren’t, you do what people expect you to do and show up completely differently. In the long run, that doesn’t work. It doesn’t work in marketing, employee relationships, or growth.

The Power of Intentionality

When it comes to practicing living your personal brand, Tracy says intentionality is essential all the time.

How often are you doing things intentionally? Are you just going through the motions because you believe it’s what you should do, or are you intentionally making choices that connect to your values?

It’s especially important to be intentional if you’re an entrepreneur. You shouldn’t be doing things just to fill the time. This can be strange, especially if you came from a corporate environment where you are used to working an eight hour day. Now that you work for yourself, it can be easy to fall into the trap of working the same eight hours without actually being productive.

When you show up intentionally within your personal brand, you will move the needle on what matters to you.

For example, one of Tracy’s personal values is authenticity. So, when she’s working in her business, she goes into the day with that in mind. Anytime she begins a task, she works to show up authentically. She’s also started not doing tasks or taking meetings where she can’t show up authentically. Because of this value, she also works to create space for those around her to be authentic.

At the end of every day, instead of looking at how many meetings she had or how many words she wrote, Tracey asks herself two questions:

  1. Did I show up authentically today?
  2. How many times did I create space for someone to show up authentically today?

Those questions help her measure success and continue to make progress on the things that matter to her.

When you can show up with the intentionality of your personal brand to choose the activities that are in line with that, you have so much power to do the things that matter to you. Not only that, but you do them better.

Green Window Emotions

When trying to identify the things and activities that match your personal brand and values, it’s important to stay in tune with your feelings.

You can look at anything you experience, whether in your personal life or your work, that makes you feel what Tracy calls a green emotion. A green emotion is anything that you give yourself the green light to feel more of. This could be feelings such as fun, excitement, calm, flow, or peace.

These feelings exist because something about the activity you’re doing is aligned with who you are in your nature. So look at those activities more closely. Ask yourself, what was it about that activity that made me feel so aligned?

Green emotions are great windows into your personal brand.

If you show up to your tasks from the perspective of intentionally choosing to do them, you come from a place of creativity and joy. On the other hand, if something feels hard, you should ask yourself why you’re doing it. If the reason you’re doing it is that someone else said you should, that’s not a good reason.

Show up in your personal brand and values, and you’ll find that you make progress on the things that matter to you and inspire others to do the same.
