Social media is important when marketing your business. It basically provides a way to get in front of your target audience for free (if you’re not paying for ads). One question I get asked often is, “What are the most important social media platforms?”
Have you ever wondered which social media networks you should be on to grow your business and which ones should be avoided? Social media sites are not all created equally and there will be some sites that are more effective than others depending on your goals and audience.
That said, I feel some people who ask me this are expecting a get out of jail free card to avoid whatever social media platform they don’t like. Here’s the thing…
As an entrepreneur, service provider, expert, coach, or consultant, you get to decide where you participate and where you throw your energy.
You Decide the Most Important Social Media Platforms For Your Business
You’re building a business around your ideas and knowledge. This means you get to say whether something is an unnecessary evil. That said, sometimes you do need to fish where the fish are.
If you are a corporate consultant who hates LinkedIn, I hate to break it to you. Learn to love LinkedIn. But when you’re thinking about the different social media platforms, you need to focus on where you draw your energy.
If social media drains you, I get it because it’s a hungry beast. But if it drains you, I think there’s a way for you to reframe it. I don’t encourage any of our clients to join a social network, they haven’t already joined. Because starting off, it’s going to be a little bit harder, except Tiktok. Tiktok is excellent. Everybody should be on Tiktok as well as YouTube. You have to be somewhat remotely interested in YouTube to consider doing videos for your business.
Where Your Audience Spends Time Online is Also Important
When it comes to determining the most important social media platforms, think about what you like and where you already have an established presence. Then, consider where your target audience is.
If your people are visual and you like Instagram, get established on Instagram. In our client onboarding process, we talk through the various platforms. I offer advice, but the decision is ultimately up to you.
I’m not going to try to convince you to get on a certain platform if you don’t feel it’s right for you. Chances are, you’re probably right with your first instinct. Instead, we might propose you go on your favorite channels like Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, to post native content.
Whenever you post native content, what you would be doing is supplementing, not supplanting the videos that we are uploading for you. In addition to the videos, you’ll get written blog posts and long-form LinkedIn posts, Twitter threads, and Instagram quotes.
Again, we’re not going to make you go on Twitter, if you’re not already on Twitter. So the answer to, What are the most important social media platforms? is that it depends. Terrible answer, right? But it’s true.
You should also be on as many different channels that you are comfortable with. You can even hire out the task of managing your social media. Let me know if you need help with social media because I know plenty of people that would be willing and excellent helpers for you.
When you’re asking me where to focus your social media energy, I say focus on the channels that you are already on. Then, if you’re working with us, you never have to worry about whether your Instagram page is too personal. When you work with us, what you’re doing is showing the human side while we work on the business side. If you want to talk about social strategy, I have 15-minute sessions that you’re more than welcome to book here. I’d love to talk with you.
