Kathleen Celmins is the CEO and co-founder of Amplified NOW, a video-first content marketing agency that helps businesses with a purpose create content with a purpose. 

She sat down with Mariana Ruiz to talk about how she’s doing marketing differently.

Business With A Purpose

Mariana is the founder and CEO of The Impact Driven Entrepreneur. Her focus is on helping coaches and consultants build a profitable business that allows them to work three days a week while doing work that helps people.

Mariana has been running a business and doing sales for over 14 years and working on her current company for the last seven. Nothing she has built has happened overnight, but she has learned how improving and consistently following workflow systems makes a business successful over time.

Mariana is passionate about helping create and maintain well-functioning teams. She believes that having the right people in the right places is going to help you. When the COVID-19 Pandemic began, Mariana drew a lot of strength from her team. That experience solidified her belief that assisting entrepreneurs to build their ideal teams was part of the impact she wants to make in the world. 

Avoiding Burn-Out Through High-Level Thinking

Before beginning her online business, Mariana worked in the Health Care industry. When she started as a bedside nurse in the ICU she was unprepared for the amount of physical labor involved in her work. She began to notice that if she used her brain to problem solve more and create strategies, she could minimize physical labor. When she started implementing some of those ideas, she began to climb the corporate ladder. 

Before long, she was asked to run three hospitals. She was excited about the opportunity, but the same week that she was offered the promotion, her daughter was born prematurely at 28-weeks, weighing just two pounds. 

This shifted her priorities, and she decided to leave the hospital administration world and focus on her coaching business. However, the habits from her previous job didn’t just fall away. She was used to being on call 24/7 and working long hours. She recreated that in her business, working all the time to the point of burnout. 

Finally, she realized that this wasn’t going to work for her. As the primary caretaker for a special needs child and the CEO of her business, she couldn’t keep up the pace she had set. 
She knew it was a problem when she realized it would be easier to go back to her corporate job because she would have a strict schedule and better work/life balance. 

She tuned into her purpose and realized that devoting herself to a corporate job would not fulfill her goals. She began rebuilding from the ground up and found a way to make the money she desired without working herself into exhaustion. 

Leverage Your Knowledge

Mariana says that online teaching business or skill sets that can be taught or transferred typically succeed best with this modified three-day-a-week schedule. 

Like Mariana did as an ICU nurse, you want to explore how you can think more high-level and critically about your business. If you are running an agency or working in a very client-oriented industry, think about how you can leverage some of your knowledge to teach other people what you know.

When helping her clients start their teaching programs, they begin with a live group program. Then, with the feedback they get, her clients can run session after session and eventually transition into a course format.

Doing Marketing Differently

Mariana finds that most clients who come to her are currently trying to span the entire customer success journey. They are doing marketing, sales, customer fulfillment, and trying to keep and retain customers. So those are four separate roles that they are trying to cover on their own.

They go and get clients, and then once those clients come, they get to work providing their services. Before long, they remember that they still need to get more clients, so they have to run back to that operation. This back and forth is unsustainable, but they often don’t feel like they can get help because their income isn’t stable enough. 

This is where the work Mariana does comes into play. Doing marketing differently means thinking high level and creating sustainable processes. Soon these entrepreneurs can create more consistent income and hire help to keep it running because their business is operating at its highest level. As a result, her clients can help others, find more freedom, and have a thriving business.
